Peckham’s car park-turned arts space Bold Tendencies welcome back the James McVinnie Ensemble, who will present five pieces by contemporary American composers written across the last 50 years.

Music includes Julius Eastman’s Gay Guerrilla, written ten years after the Stonewall riots and on the cusp of the AIDS epidemic; Marcos Balter’s Dreamcatcher, reflecting on the family separation crisis created by the Trump administration’s border policy; a piece by Inti Giggis-Vizueta, which follows overlapping immigrant communities, Black-founded Freedom schools, Andean and Irish heritage; and works by Christopher Cerrone and Meredith Monk about the noise, structure and feelings of the modern city.

The performance will be interspersed with poems from an iconic work of the Harlem Renaissance published 100 years ago. Paul Mendez, the acclaimed author of Rainbow Milk, will read from Claude McKay’s 1922 collection Harlem Shadows.

Performers include James McVinnie, Eliza McCarthy, Siwan Rhys, Hugh Rowlands, and Paul Mendez.
