the music

Nico Muhly and Philip Glass are two of the biggest names in minimalism, and this programme features some of their best work from the last few years.

If you’re not familiar with ‘minimalist’ music, here’s a quick intro.

Simply put, minimalist music does what it says on the tin - it’s music made up of a minimal amount of stuff. Rather than combining loads of different ideas at once, it’s made up of patterns and repetitions of the same few notes.

It’s mesmerising when done by the best composers, and Glass and Muhly are world-leading pioneers of the genre.

Have a listen to the two pieces below (both on the programme), and listen to how they set up a pattern and then start to mess around with it. You never quite know where it’s going to go. Take a moment to close your eyes and listen - you might find it really takes you away.

the performer

James McVinnie is one of the leading performers of minimalist piano music. He’s personally collaborated with Phillip Glass and Nico Muhly, so he really understands how to get the most out of their work. There’s really no-one out there better placed to perform these pieces.

This isn’t just any car park. Bold Tendencies have been running this multi-storey car park in Peckham as an art, music and dance venue since 2007. Over the last 13 years they’ve converted one of the floors into a concert hall and another into a rooftop bar and restaurant called Frank’s Cafe…

The music in this concert is inspired by the big American cities. We’re convinced that hearing it live, surrounded by panoramic views of London, is about as good a time you can have this side of the Atlantic.
