The viol was once the most fashionable instrument in Europe, its luscious sound defining the soundtrack of the 17th and 18th Centuries. The OAE celebrate the music written for it at their Night Shift series, which takes place in London’s pubs.

The ensemble’s prinicpal cellist and one the finest virtuoso viol players in the world hosts this performance, where they return to Shadwell’s George Tavern. The sets will include English and French music including by Christopher Simpson, the leading English exponent of the instrument, and its greatest master, Marin Marais.
