the performers:
Christian Tetzlaff (violin) + Florian Donderer (violin) + Timothy Ridout (viola) + Tanja Tetzlaff (cello) + Kiveli Dörken (piano)
the programme:
Dvorak Terzetto + Suk Piano Quintet
The concert starts with Dvorák’s Terzetto in C, a beautiful piece for two violins and viola. Dvorák wrote the piece over a few days in 1887, hoping that he could play it with a chemistry student who was renting a room in his house at the time.
In the end, the violin part proved too difficult for the student, but you can still sense that the Terzetto was intended to be played at home by three friends. Listen to the heartfelt warmth of the opening melody: it’s a characterful conversation between three equal individuals.
Josef Suk’s Piano Quintet in G minor is, we think, underrated. Suk was one of Dvorák’s pupils but, although there are similarities between their styles, Suk’s music is full of individuality.
This piece is full of bright and vivid sounds, and is genuinely uplifting. Just what we need right now! Have a listen here to the third movement. Live, this will be great.
The great thing about this piece is not just its joyfulfulness, though. There’s so much soul and beauty too: the slow movement, for instance, is often introverted and deeply personal. Listen to the magical way it starts here.
about the performers:
Christian Tetzlaff is undoubtedly one of the top violinists in the world at the moment. It’s unusual to see him in this slightly smaller, intimate venue. The Guardian described his performance of the Beethoven violin concerto as the best they’d ever heard…
Tetzlaff has put together this all-star line-up of international soloists to perform a very limited run of shows at the London Symphony Orchestra’s St Luke’s venue near Old Street. Definitely worth trying to get tickets ASAP.
the venue:
LSO St Luke’s is the London Symphony Orchestra’s beautiful grade 1 listed building just off the Old Street roundabout - not far from Brick Lane, Shoreditch, and the City. It’s an 18th century church converted to have a super slick interior - it really is stunning inside and out.
the price:
£15 (£13 concessions, £5 for under 18s)
