Sax and guitar: Jess Gillam and MILOS collaborate

  • £20 | Wigmore Hall 36 Wigmore Street London, England, W1U 2BP United Kingdom (map)

the performers:

Jess Gillam (saxophone) + MILOS (guitar)

the programme:

Dowland + Glass + Villa-Lobos + de Falla + Monk + Arlen + Piazzolla

the music:

This exciting duo will play eight pieces that showcase both their world-renowned solo playing and their innovative work together.

The first piece they’ll play was originally written for voice and lute, but works really well on sax and guitar.

Next up is Philip Glass’ Melody, played by Gillam. Glass is famous for hypnotic melodies that repeat and evolve, and this piece makes the most of the saxophone’s links with jazz.  There’s a real meditative quality to this one.

Milos will then take over with two short pieces by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Villa-Lobos’ music is a rare combination of Brazilian folk and more traditional classical influences: it’s unlike any other ‘classical’ music.

In the main event of the evening, Milos and Gillam will play two of the most famous pieces written for guitar: Manuel de Falla’s Danza from The Three Cornered Hat, and 7 canciones populares españolas (Spanish songs). Each song represents the local style of an area of Spain, but when put together, tell a story of love and anger. Have a listen to soprano Feryal Qudourah and guitarist Philip Logan giving a heartfelt performance to get an idea.

You’ll then be treated to Gillam’s performance of Meredith Monk’s Early Morning Song and Milos playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Their final duet, Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, is a snapshot of the tango at different points and places in time - be sure to listen out for how other styles are gradually brought into the mix as the piece goes on.

the performers:

We’re really excited to hear these two collaborate. As well as being award-winning soloists, their passion for bringing music to as big an audience as possible has earned them big presenting jobs on radio and TV, and on stage they’ve both got real star quality.

Have a listen to Gillam and Milos talking about their work together here.
