Young violinist Randall Goosby and the award-winning pianist Zhu Wang present a recital centring on works by three Black composers whose works are enjoying a long-overdue resurgence of interest.
First there’s Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who was championed by Elgar and Stanford in the late 19th century, with his early Suite all about charm and lyricism. His favourite composer was Dvořák, whose Sonatina which follows in the programme shows the Czech composer at his most intimate.
Next comes the engaging Suite by William Grant Still and, after the interval, his colleague Florence Price, who is represented by two rhapsodic Fantasies, before the concert closes with Richard Strauss’ romantic Violin Sonata.
