the programme:
Mozart G Major Duo + Beethoven “Eyeglasses” + Ravel Sonata for violin and cello + Kodaly Intermezzo for string trio + Beethoven Trio in c minor
Artisti Con Brio’s programme shows a completely different side to playing a string instrument. The three players will take turns playing duets, and only come together to play as a trio for the last section of the concert. This will be a really exciting time for the players as well as the audience, and will give us a rare chance to see the players up close and personal.
The first two pieces have been remembered for other reasons as well as the music: Mozart’s Duet for Violin and Viola in G Major was originally written as a secret ending to another composer’s set of string duos, and was only found out because of his tricky writing for the viola player.
The second piece, Beethoven’s Duo for Viola and Cello, is also known as the “Eyeglasses” duet. Where other pieces have titles that might refer to a story or emotion within the music, this piece earned its name through Beethoven and his friend both having to wear glasses so they could see the music in front of them.
Look below to see a duo who definitely took this seriously…
Next is Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello, which is completely different in mood to Mozart’s and Beethoven’s duets. Finished in 1922, Ravel expresses his emotion towards the Great War and his own experiences of illness: the violin and cello wind around each other, creating hypnotic repeating patterns that can be sweet or intense. The second movement is particularly eerie…
Finally, all three players will perform Kodaly’s Intermezzo, which features real Hungarian folk tunes recorded by the composer, and Beethoven’s Trio in C minor, his last and most emotional string trio.
This piece is famous for its quick changes in mood, and rapidly rising and falling melodies thrown around from player to player. Listen to the final movement for a fast-paced race to the finish that keeps everyone on their toes.
