New research: singing as safe as speaking

A new study published today has concluded that singing is no more dangerous than speaking, giving hope to the world of live performance.

The paper, lead by a team of specialist academics, doctors and surgeons from around the UK, tested the amount of aerosol droplets produced by singing and speaking.

As it turns out, the thing that really matters is how loud you sing or speak. Singing doesn’t produce many more droplets than speaking.

The study was commissioned and funded by the Government, and culture secretary Oliver Dowden has said the study means ‘we can get performers back on stage’.

We’ll have to see what the guidance will be, but this is the biggest step forward for a while. Fingers crossed that this is the beginning of live music’s return.

As soon as more concerts are announced, we’ll be giving you all our top picks and insight into what to go and see.
