New research seems to show that classical music’s popularity has surged over the last few months, with younger audiences increasingly trying new genres in lockdown. This is the kind of news we like.

Record label association BPI, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and streaming service Deezer have found that the proportion of classical music streams by the under-35s increased over the last year. The research, which used official streaming data, found that almost 40% of global classical music streams on Deezer within the last 12 months were by under-35s - a 17% increase on last year.

Interestingly, one of the biggest rises was in 18-25s - up 11% in February - April.

A lot of the people asked said that their new listening habits had helped them with anxiety during lockdown, and 35% of under 35s said that when they had felt low or stressed, putting on something classical had lifted their spirits.

We’re hoping that as we set through the noise in motion, we can get people out of their homes and listening to great classical music in real life. It’s a genre that makes a lot more sense when you hear it in person, and we’ve got lots of ideas about where to go to hear the best for the least £££.
