what are noisenights?

noisenights are our vision for the future of classical music: crowdfunded gigs taking world-leading musicians to iconic independent venues.

At the centre of every noisenight is a one-hour classical set. We platform international soloists and ensembles while also giving opportunities to outstanding new artists. All noisenights take place in gig venues where you get to experience classical music up close.

Live music needs your backing more than ever. Backing a noisenight means getting tickets to hear the world's best performers in grassroots venues and being part of a community working for a positive future for live music. Putting it simply, you giving your backing will make this gig happen and secure you a ticket.

After a noisenight reaches its funding target, we'll e-mail all backers to confirm it and a small amount of extra tickets will be made available. Tickets are released in four stages, which increase in price the closer to the event they're purchased. Book early to get the best price.

Please note that due to the venue's license, this noisenight is strictly 14+ (all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult).

the venue:

The only surviving Elizabethan church in London, The Old Church is a not-for-profit arts space and gig venue in the heart of Stoke Newington.

Formerly the medieval and Tudor church of St Mary's, the venue has become a secret spot for London's grassroots and underground club scene.

the music:

Idrîsî Ensemble explores medieval textuality and orality in a programme of rare, endangered and never-recorded music. Old Roman chant, early polyphony, Corsican and Greek traditions intersect and offer the vision of a shared Mediterranean heritage. Idrîsî chorus and qanun player Konstantinos Glynos journey across a millennium, from the 4th to the 14th century. Navigating the dynamic between singer and scribe, they explore new frontiers in the performance of identity.

idrîsî ensemble:

Pioneering a fresh approach to historical performance, the Idrîsî Ensemble performs medieval repertoire from period manuscripts, together with UNESCO-protected and endangered traditions.

They sing the Mediterranean, not as a border between distinct identities, but as a space of exchange, communion, and evolution. Through their research in medieval literature, music archaeology, and postcolonial historiography, they aim to complicate modern notions of identity and alterity.

As the sole UK ensemble specialised in the performance of Old Roman chant, they offer a unique glimpse into the vocal traditions of late antiquity. James Weeks, director of the internationally renowned vocal ensemble EXAUDI, described their music as a “total gamechanger” and “not mere escapist nostalgia, but a living, exploratory art of real power”.

Idrîsî was an esteemed Muslim cartographer who received his education in Cordoba, and embarked on a journey to Sicily at the invitation of Norman King Roger II. In this diverse cultural milieu, he created a revolutionary world map. His work and travels are the symbol of a rich and unified world beyond borders and beliefs. Through his meticulous methods, the seamless blending of ancient Ptolemaic principles with contemporary techniques, and the integration of varied strategies and viewpoints, Idrîsî fostered a novel vision of the world.
